Nostalgia Groceries with Stephanie Shih

$375.00 Regular price
Stephanie Shih's work explores diasporic migration and cultural interchange through the lens of the Asian-American pantry, and in this two-day crash course she'll teach students the techniques she uses to make her "nostalgia groceries." The workshop will include hands-on demos of Stephanie's hand-building and painting techniques, a primer on working with Amaco underglazes, and an artist talk. Before the workshop, Stephanie will be in contact to help students choose the groceries they will build and paint.

This is a two day workshop meeting on:

Saturday, February 19, 2022 from 1:00pm-5:00pm
Sunday, February 20, 2022 from 11:00am-5:00pm

This workshop is beginner-friendly and open to potters of all levels.

Day 1: Hand-building. Stephanie will go over the coiling techniques she's developed over the years, especially as they relate to accurate shaping and sizing. By the end of the day, each student should have a greenware replica of their chosen object, which will then be dried to past-leatherhard by the next morning. The day will conclude with a brief artist talk and Q&A session.

Day 2: Painting. Stephanie will go over best practices for working with Amaco Velvet underglazes and the techniques she uses to create her grocery labels. Then, she will review her waxing and glazing techniques, which the students will do on their own once their work has been bisqued. Note: Everyone works at different speeds and not all students will finish painting their sculptures by the end of the day.

Most tools and paint supplies will be provided; additional materials will be available for sale.
