Raku at Still Life

$225.00 Regular price

We are excited to begin offering regular raku firings and teaching sessions led by Natalya Seva. This is a great way to learn about the magic and science behind raku and have your own pieces fired in this special way.

Raku is the closest a potter gets to unraveling the magic of the ceramic process - the chemistry, geology, the change of organics into minerals, making the ephemeral and amorphous into permanent and memorable. Being able to step in during the firing and control the outcome of the process is not a common opportunity for a contemporary potter. With the guidance of Natalya Seva, who has a decade of experience firing raku kilns, participants will learn and evolve through the techniques this firing allows for while producing original work of their own.

Still Life will provide colored terra sigillata (to be applied in-studio to greenware prior to firing), access to handouts and videos outlining how to build your piece and prepare it for firing to achieve successful results, instructor Natalya assisting during firing process and sharing strategies for success, and combustibles for the firing day such as sugar, horse hair, and feathers.

Participants should bring up to five bisque fired pieces on the day of the firing. In our experience, cone 10 Babu porcelain works best to resist cracks from thermal shock. Each piece should not exceed 14" in height or width, with a total limit of 1080 cubic inches for all of your pieces plus any additional material such as aluminum foil or wire baskets.

Natalya Seva has a background in oil painting and animation, but it was her discovery of clay that introduced magic into her life. In her creations, she combines the natural richness of clay with other materials like wood, glass, metal to create stunning works that are beautiful, dramatic, and elegant. See more of Natalya's work here.
