Colorful Slipcasting with Forest Ceramic CO - Santa Monica

$500.00 Regular price

In this workshop, Sean and Valeri will cover all aspects of bringing slipcasting into your studio practice. The basics will be covered, with a very quick mold demo and simple castings, then move to more advanced techniques. The process includes working with colored slip, and various additive and subtractive processes, manipulating the slipcasting process beyond simple casting from a mold. Methods for using cast pieces along with wheel or handbuilt bases will also be covered. The goal during the workshop is to understand the slipcasting process, and students will keep 2-3 successful castings.

Forest Ceramic Company is located on Orcas Island, WA, and owned and managed by Sean Forest Roberts, and run by our tiny team of 6! With a background in chemistry and four years of work experience in science labs, Sean brings an experimental mindset to the studio. The basis of the process we currently use began with Sean's experimentation 9 years ago with marbling and layering and carving colored slips. Colored liquid clays are mixed and poured to create the vast array of patterns available in our designs. He is fascinated by the underlying randomness in patterns and structures of nature, and attempts to replicate some of those effects in his work, which is constantly changing as we explore new ways of creating pattern, texture, and form.

Born and raised in Bulgaria, Valeri Aleksandrov moved to Orcas Island in 2015 after spending 5 summers on the island beforehand. With a masters degree in financial management and banking, he never thought his life will shift dramatically, with clay being a career and full time job. Mentored by Sean, Valeri began his journey in porcelain in 2015, and has been a part of the company since the beginning. Over the course of the last 6 years, he’s been mastering his own unique hand-carved, nature inspired layered colored porcelain styles and have helped along the way developing the business side by side with his partner Sean.
