This hands-on workshop will focus on helping you develop the skills and confidence to throw larger vessels on the pottery wheel. This includes the technical breakdown of how to achieve balance and form while efficiently working with more clay. We will explore how to make tall vases, bottles, throwing off-the-hump, and more. The smaller forms that will be thrown off-the-hump are chawans (ceremonial matcha bowls) and yunomi (daily tea cups). It is recommended that you have at least an intermediate skill level with wheel throwing. Participants should be able to center 2 to 3 pounds of clay comfortably. By the end of this workshop, you will have a better understanding of how to create larger forms on the pottery wheel. Throughout the workshop, Jotham will be taking demo requests if there are any other techniques that students would like to see.

This is a one-day, hands-on workshop that meets on:

Sunday, January 14th, 2024 // 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

My work is an ongoing exploration of ceramic objects as canvases that relate to the physical and non-physical world. Dynamic and rich surfaces that demonstrate tension between color, form, shape, and texture. The display of discovery, human touch, and emotion are imperative.

Furthermore, I enjoy posing the question of what it means to make a mistake, or what it means to fail. I seek to bridge the gap between perceived beauty, perfection, and imperfection. I push materials to their limits to show their expressive qualities, occasionally showing what we perceive as failures can be translated into something beautiful.
I’ve been working with clay for over a decade now and have been teaching for half the time. My studio is currently located in Pasadena, CA, where I make the majority of my ceramic objects and teach from.
