Still Life Studio

850 Pico Blvd
Santa Monica, CA 90405

In this four week course, artist Amy Kivnick will show us how to create dynamic, layered surfaces using glazes, oxides, wax resist, and more. We will explore a controlled and spontaneous approach to glazing using numerous techniques. If you've been dipping your pieces in one or two colors and you'd like to see what else is possible with glazes, this is the perfect course for you. Additional topics will include inlay, using glass, and operating the spray booth, with tips on the types of forms that are best to use with each technique.

As this class is all about the glazing process, students are required to bring in their own bisque pieces. You may work with cone 10 or cone 5/6 clay (or both!). We will have some sample tiles for you to practice on for the first week of class, but please plan on making your own work to use. Amy has some project ideas that go with each of the lessons, and we recommend bringing a bone dry greenware cup (wheel thrown or handbuilt -- your choice) to the first class so we can bisque it and work on it for week 2.

You may use the studio during open hours (10am-8pm Mon-Thurs, 10am-4pm Fri-Sun) during this course for you to make your pieces and have them bisque fired.

Beginner, intermediate, and advanced potters are all welcome in this class; you should have some experience in either wheel throwing or handbuilding and be able to make your own pieces. Course fee includes firing for up to 15 pieces and studio recycled clay. If you would like to use another kind of clay, we have many available for sale in our shop.

Instructor Amy Kivnick has been making pottery since 1988, starting in a class at the Clayhouse in Santa Monica. Over the years she strengthened her skills in handbuilding, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture in various classes and workshops. Amy has developed a particular interest in glazing techniques and finishes, and is always eager to share her knowledge and experience with her fellow potters.
