Learn the ins and outs of throwing porcelain forms and formulating crystalline glazes from glaze chemist and ceramics professor, Ian Childers. This intermediate course will cover glaze formulation, making and preparing pots for crystalline glazing, sanding and polishing finished pots, and acid etching glazes to make them pop. If you have been hesitant to explore the world of porcelain, or want to level up your surface decoration with new glazes and specialty firing, now is the time to learn!

Still Life Studio

850 Pico Blvd Santa Monica, CA 90405

Saturdays from 10-12pm starting July 13th. Four class sessions total, with open studio time to prepare work for firing throughout the course.

Join us for a four week course of glaze and clay exploration where you will learn to formulate crystalline glazes to apply over porcelain pieces. Learn techniques and best practices for throwing porcelain, how to create catches to fire your work with crystal glazes, and all the science behind crystal formulation in a kiln.  In this class, you will learn about the different ingredients that go into a glaze, explore how they interact with each other, and create, mix, and test glaze recipes with materials provided. The science behind glaze chemistry is presented in an accessible, easy-to-follow way with time each week for Q&A with your instructor.

This is an intermediate course; to get the most out of this class, you should feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in the four week Beginning Wheel course, and can somewhat reliably wedge, center, and throw 2.5-3 lbs of clay. Typically, students take Beginning Wheel twice before taking a Continuing Wheel/Intermediate class. .

All glaze materials and limited amounts of Coleman porcelain will be provided. Students should bring their own tools and bats, and are welcome to purchase additional clay to create work with throughout the course. There will be one crystalline glaze firing at the end of the class, and each student is welcome to fire up to 4-5 pieces under 12". Additional firing may be considered, pending kiln space based on the work to be loaded.  Classes will consist of a lecture plus time for Q+A and mixing your glazes. We'll be focusing on cone 10 crystalline glazes.
