Our First Annual Cup Show DTLA

This June studio members put together an incredible show of their work: our first annual Cup Show!

BUT WHAT IS A CUP?

  • Bakers define it as a unit of measurement.
  • Athletes define it as a championship.
  • Acupuncturists say it’s a verb.

But ceramicists know cups cannot be defined by such rigid terms. A cup is defined less by how it looks and more by how it touches us. An intimate tool, a cup is known by the pads of our fingers and the cusp of our lips. A link between worlds, it transports liquids from the bright exterior (say from a river, or a McDonald’s soda fountain) to the dark interior of our bodies. Without cups, humans would have long lost their daily war against dehydration.

Without cups, humans could never fathom a warmed or iced beverage. The world wouldn’t be the same without cups. And the world changes just a little bit, every time we make a new cup.

Members were encouraged to submit work that is true to their artistic style, or to use this show as an opportunity to try a new style. This show aims to strengthen our community by granting members space to share finished work.

Special thanks to studio member Catherine Klauss @bonnetboy.art on Instagram for organizing the theme of the show, the text and the member art.
