Participants will explore the rich history and techniques of Maiolica glaze painting in this hands-on workshop with Michelle Im. The workshop will cover everything from the traditional roots of the technique to its contemporary adaptations. You’ll learn how to mix your own colored stains, understand the principles of low-temperature glaze firing, and practice brushwork directly onto glazed ceramic surfaces. Participants will fire test tiles to build their personal reference library and gain practical insights into adapting Maiolica technique for mid to high-fire studios using alternative materials such as AMACO underglazes and Stroke & Coat glazes.
Workshop Outline:
Day One:
On the first day of the workshop, Michelle will begin with a brief history presentation of maiolica and an overview of the low-fire tradition, including the technique, materials, and process. A demonstration will follow, showing how to stain the maiolica base glaze. Students will then prepare their tiles and apply the glaze, after which they will paint their own personal bisque ware. As part of the process, students will learn how to mix ceramic stains and will prepare five different colors. These colors will be tested on sample tiles, which will be fired overnight to cone 04.
Day Two:
The session will begin with slides for painting inspiration, followed by a group review of the test tiles from the previous day. A painting demonstration will then be presented, after which students will practice maiolica painting on bisqueware they have brought from home. Demonstrations on wax resist and washes will be given, along with an introduction to alternative materials for maiolica painting, such as Stroke & Coats and underglaze. Students will then practice applying wax resist treatments and utilizing washes. The class will conclude with a final group discussion covering firing temperatures and how to adapt the process for mid-range or high-fire work.
