You can glaze your pots, but how much do you know about glaze itself? How are glazes made? How can you alter a glaze recipe to change the sheen, the color, or the way a glaze flows?  Gaining an understanding of glaze chemistry and learning to make your own glazes is an important step for any ceramicist who's serious about their work, and our studio manager and glaze expert Jorge Jimenez Jr. is here to teach you the fundamentals of glaze chemistry in this four-week course.

We will focus on formulating and firing glazes to cone 10 reduction, although the principles of glaze chemistry apply across the firing spectrum and you'll be able to use what you've learned in the course toward making glazes for any temperature range you wish. If you would like to work on cone 5 glazes in this course, we can help -- please email classes@stilllifeceramics.com after enrolling to let us know.

Still Life Studio

850 Pico Blvd Santa Monica, CA 90405

Fridays from 12-2pm. Four class sessions total.

Join us for a four week course of glaze exploration where you will create your own cone 10 glazes from scratch. In this class, you will learn about the different ingredients that go into a glaze, explore how they interact with each other, and create, mix, and test your own glaze recipes with materials provided. The science behind glaze chemistry is presented in an accessible, easy-to-follow way with plenty of time each week for Q&A with your instructor.

All skill levels are welcome to take this class, but you should have some experience working with clay, and knowledge of the basic glaze application process is recommended.

All materials and supplies are provided. Classes will consist of a lecture plus time for Q+A and mixing your glazes. We'll be focusing on cone 10 glazes, which will be fired in a reduction atmosphere, however, the principles of glaze chemistry apply across the firing spectrum and you'll be able to use what you've learned in the course to make glazes for any temperature range you wish. If you would like to work on cone 5 glazes in this course, we can help -- please email classes@stilllifeceramics.com after enrolling to let us know.
