Overview
This is an introductory workshop for anyone interested in exploring cone 10 crystalline glazes that will cover the following:
  • glaze formulation,
  • making and preparing pots for crystalline glazing,
  • sanding and polishing finished pots,
  • and acid etching glazes to make them pop

Each participant will be given two pieces of bisque ware to glaze, fire, and keep.  Led by visiting artist Ian Childers, this workshop will take place at our Santa Monica studio over 2 days.

Ian is also teaching an additional workshop at our DTLA location: Advanced Throwing Techniques on August 1st and 2nd. If you register for both workshops, we will also allow attendees of the Advanced Throwing workshop to fire one of their pieces in the crystalline firing in addition to the provided bisque pieces.

Location and Dates
Still Life Studio // Santa Monica

850 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405

This is a two-day workshop meeting on:

Saturday, August 8th: 10:00am-4pm
Sunday, August 9th: 10:00am-4pm

Workshop Description

Day One: Ian will begin with an introductory conversation about crystalline glazes. Each participant will be provided a handout with recipes and basic info. Glaze prepping will take place and participants will glaze provided bisque ware with the crystalline glazes. Ian will also demo throwing specific forms and lecture on throwing specifically for crystalline glaze firings.

Day Two: Additional throwing and trimming demos will take place, as well as discussing glaze catchers for the pots as well. The crystalline glaze firings from the previous day will be unloaded from the kiln. The rest of the day will be removing the glaze pedestals, sanding, finishing wares, and acid etching.

Please note that due to the condensed nature of this workshop, in order for the pieces to be removed from the crystalline kiln post-firing and be available for sanding and acid etching within the same day, we may unload the kiln at a higher temperature per the artist's recommendations.
