Class Outline

Challenge yourself and learn how to build bigger, more complex, and more stable forms efficiently.

Week 1: Dynamic Coil Building + Texture
We will begin with a coil-built form focusing on movement and shape. Students will also create textured test tiles to explore surface treatments for glazing.

Week 2: Slabs and Surface Design
Students will finish and refine their coil pieces, explore slab methods and greenware surface decoration methods. Students will also learn how to make cookies to use during the glazing process.

Week 3: Troubleshooting, Repair, and Review
Students will continue to work on their projects, assess their pieces+ building experience and discuss methods to address different construction concerns.  Students will then use the test tiles to introduce basic glaze application and surface interaction.

Week 4: Glazing
Students will complete all their greenware by the final class date and discuss glazing methods.

To get the most out of this class, you should feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in the four week Beginning Handbuilding course.

In addition to the weekly class meetings, we have open hours seven days a week for you to come in and work on your own.

Continuing Handbuilding students should bring their own clay and tools to this class. We have a supply shop at the studio where you can purchase these things if you need them. The course fee includes firing for up to 12 pieces (under 12" in any direction).
