Have you ever tried to create a larger piece by throwing more clay, only to have it turn out the same size? Have you ever wanted to create a taller vase or lamp base? You’re not alone!

Move out of your pottery comfort zone and learn to work with more clay by being more efficient with the clay that you do use and then how to join two or more thrown pieces to create a taller form!

This class will share tips to select an appropriate clay, techniques to use more clay efficiently, sizing and structuring pieces to stack, as well as trimming and glazing oversized pieces.

This class is recommended for intermediate level potters who feel comfortable with the throwing process; see below for more information. This is a condensed month-long class which will meet for two hours each week for a total of four sessions, with open studio time every day for you to practice on your own. See the class schedule below.

Still Life Studio

Santa Monica, CA 90405

To get the most out of this class, you should feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in the four week Beginning Wheel course, and can somewhat reliably wedge, center, and throw 3 lbs of clay. Typically, students take Beginning Wheel twice before taking a Continuing Wheel class.

In addition to the weekly class meetings, we have open hours seven days a week for you to come in and work on your own.

This 4-week class is structured as follows:

  • Week 1: Choosing Clay and Throwing Forms to Stack

  • Week 2: Joining and Stacking

  • Week 3: Trimming tall forms

  • Week 4: Glazing tall forms

Each session will include one or more demonstrations, discussion on techniques and best practices, and work time to develop and gain feedback on your individual process.

The class does not include clay. We encourage you to purchase a bag of B-Mix with grog or sand (Cone 5), which can be stored on our class shelf. Free recycled clay is also available to students.

Continuing Wheel students should bring their own clay, tools, and bats (we recommend at least four 12" bats). We have a supply shop at the studio where you can purchase these things if you need them. The course fee includes firing for up to 2 tall pieces and use of studio recycled clay. Additional pieces may be fired at your own expense; please reach out to classes@stilllifeceramics.com to coordinate.
